Dreamy, synth-driven melodies, cinematic progressions, powerful pop vocals, and punchy beats – this is the sonic palate of alt-pop duo EMERGER, formed by Emma de Goede (lead vocalist / pianist), and Gerry Matthee (producer / multi-instrumentalist), while studying music at the University of Cape Town.
Since the release of their debut mini-album 'Bloom' in 2018, EMERGER has been making waves. Their debut single, ‘Break & Fall’ was a winner of the Avid and Abbey Road Studios International Song Contest, picked from nearly 5000 international entries. The Los Angeles based producer and judge of the contest, John Feldmann (Goldfinger, Blink-182) said: “They have a great cinematic landscape to their music… and are a good example of what modern music can be.” They had the opportunity to travel to Abbey Road Studios in London for the mastering of this winning song. They were also selected as Apple Music's New Artist Spotlight for the month of July (2018). Their music has been featured on various Apple Music playlists, including 10 Albums You Must Hear This Month as well as on the BBC Introducing radio show in the UK.
‘Bloom’ was written, recorded and produced by the duo. To finish it off, some of SA’s best producers worked on ‘Bloom’, including Johnny de Ridder (Fokofpolisiekar), David Langemann (Freshlyground) and Andrew Rawbone-Viljoen (Diamond Thug), with mastering by Christian Wright (Radiohead, Coldplay) at Abbey Road Studios in London,
In January 2019, EMERGER hosted their sold out Live Launch at The Raptor Room in Cape Town. Since then they have opened for Goodluck across South Africa.
A recent highlight for EMERGER was playing on the main stage at Up The Creek Festival in February 2020, making it their festival debut. They continue to perform in and around Cape Town and are currently in the studio, working on exciting new singles and music videos.
EMERGER released their first official music video on 22 April 2020 for their single “Urban Wilderness”. On 29 May 2020 they released an uptempo 80's inspired synth-pop reimagination of this song, "Urban Wilderness (Reimagined)".
