Good Times #97 "Listening to the women whistling" by Diane Coetzer
Now based in the Netherlands, Diane Coetzer has been the music editor of Rolling Stone South Africa, the SA correspondent for Billboard, and a prolific writer about (mostly) South African music for nearly three decades. Over all those years, she has never stopped loving listening to songs that catch the heart and the spirit and the soul. Some of the selections on this playlist are long-time favourites of unbearable heartache (Gillian Welch’s “Annabelle”) and stunning spectral beauty (P.J Harvey’s “White Chalk”, here in a rudimentary demo version) while others, like Lucy Kruger’s intense but inviting “Play” and The One Who Sings’ comforting “You’re in Exactly the Right Place” (with the creative collaboration of two gifted electronic artists, Mr Sakitumi and Sun-El Musician) are late 2021 releases. You can follow her journey of illuminating women musicians on Twitter on @WhistlingWomen – so named for the long ago belief that women who whistled (or sang) were taboo. Full disclosure: Diane is an expert and very loud whistler!
